Sophie Fougere is a Costume and Scenic Designer. She is a graduate of the Theater Design and Production program with a concentration in scenic and costume design and current Masters of Business Management student at the University of British Columbia. Sophie first got interested in theater in high school when she joined the drama club as a stage crew person. Since then, her high school theater career included her involvement as Stage Manager and Set Designer for Shrek the Musical, Stardust, and Newsies. Additionally, Sophie has been involved with sound crew, lighting design, scene shop construction and made her directorial debut for a student-written short play competition receiving the award Best of the Fest.
Since then, Sophie has expanded her knowledge of theater production and worked on scenic paintings, props constructions, lighting hangs and focuses and has found a strong passion in costume and scenic design. Sophie has been involved in multiple theatrical productions at The 5th Avenue Theater in Downtown Seattle and UBC working on costume construction and creation. Additionally, Sophie has jumped into the film world as the costume designer for an independent student film produced in April 2022.
Sophie believes that theater lets her express herself in non-traditional ways and voice opinions that otherwise would not be heard. Sophie also hopes to use her theater and design as a way to promote positive change in the world, believing that art is the most humane form of expression, as it promotes individuality, inclusivity, and helps people find who they are. She feels especially inspired by art that helps promote social change and believes that art is perhaps the most effective vehicle in doing so.
